Some of Har’el’s surrealistic flourishes are more effective than others-Blake sitting on an abandoned school bus full of mannequins to relive a tough childhood memory is stirring, while casting an actress to play Victory’s mom is a meta twist more confusing than meaningful. And in New York we meet Victory, one of seven children in a family that performs on street corners and subway cars, guided by their attentive father but also abandoned by a mother who refuses to appear on camera. In Hawaii, a guy who calls himself “Coconut Willie” is living the ultimate beach-bum fantasy, but also tormented with the knowledge that his son is not, in fact, biologically his own. None of these slim stories would make much of a documentary on their own, but they have a nice power when put together, even if their themes and characters are so different it’s hard to come up with much of an overarching theme beyond “Love hurts.” In Alaska, Blake has found love with boyfriend Joel, but maybe not acceptance, given a career as a stripper she seems to genuinely like. What she found there makes up her new film, Lovetrue, which experiments with reenactments and surrealist scenes to accompany the true stories of its characters, but is primarily a triptych of compelling, heartbreaking tales of love and loss. Lovetrueĭocumentarian Alma Har’el was having a hard time with love, so she went searching for it-in working-class Alaska, in surfer-dude Hawaii, in a cramped outer boroughs apartment in Queens.

A simple travel movie with a mysterious, metaphysical air about it, A Hologram for the King is an evocative little mood piece, especially when scored to some lovely music by Tykwer and Johnny Klimek. Though A Hologram for the King isn’t really about much, only lightly touching on what I’m guessing are more deep thematic threads in Eggers’s novel, it still strikes some mild chords quite well, aided by Hanks’s muted charm and some terrific supporting performances, including Sarita Choudhury as a compassionate doctor.

But Tykwer’s film, which he also wrote, handles that culture clash with a surprising delicacy-sure there are some moments that might smack of stereotype, but much of the film is ruminative, open-minded, gentle. contract that will rescue his stalled career, A Hologram for the King follows in the tradition of Lost in Translation and other movies about Anglos who find themselves lost-physically, emotionally, spiritually-in an exotic land. About a businessman who travels to Saudi Arabia to secure an I.T.

Though boasting big names-Tom Hanks as star, Tom Tykwer as director-this adaptation of a Dave Eggers novel feels small, though not in a bad way. Even those looking for base titillation will leave unsatisfied. But Kelly does a rush job, hitting required plot beats without exploring any of the story’s emotional and sociological terrain. With its wild true-crime foundation, King Cobra could be such a dark, rich, engrossing movie.

Garrett Clayton, a Disney Channel star now working blue, plays Corrigan/Lockhart unevenly, though he does capture his glimmers of ambition pretty well. The two idiots are played by Keegan Allen and James Franco (who was also in I Am Michael), the latter of whom hasn’t played a credible gay man since Milk, though not for lack of trying. But as he showed in his last film, I Am Michael, Kelly, who wrote the script for King Cobra, is not a terribly astute analyst of human psychology, here reducing the story of a young porn talent and his Svengali-like producer (played well by Christian Slater), and the two jealous idiots who ultimately wreak havoc on all of their lives, to some pretty simple, cheaply illustrated motivations. Gay porn is not a world that’s often-or ever, really-explored in American narrative cinema, so there’s at least something inherently bold and interesting about director Justin Kelly’s new film, which chronicles the scandal surrounding mid-aughts barely legal porn star Brent Corrigan (real name Sean Lockhart), underage sex and murder and all. As the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival winds down this weekend, here’s a look at five notable films we saw at the festival, from a tension-filled chamber piece to gay-porn drama to Tom Hanks wandering around in the Saudi desert.
